How to Become an Instructor
Are you interested in joining our team of instructors? Then please review the following suggestions, which will help get you started in teaching the ABR® Designation Course and other REBAC offerings.
How do I become an instructor for REBAC ?
The first thing you need to do is find a "home"—a specific course provider—for whom to teach. These organizations include State and Local REALTOR® Association Boards, proprietary schools, as well as a network of educational franchises. You can begin that search by viewing our list of REBAC licensed providers.
Submit your resume to one of these providers. If they hire you, your contract will be between you and that licensed provider. They will provide the course materials for any REBAC courses that you are qualified to teach.
REBAC monitors your progress through instructor evaluations. You are also required to attend an ABR® Instructor Recertification workshop—a continuing requirement that must be met every two years.
Once a provider has hired you, they will contact REBAC, where you’ll be added to the database as an instructor. At that time you will also be added to REBAC’s e-mail list, so you can begin receiving instructor information from REBAC.
Can I teach for other REBAC course providers?
Yes, unless you have an exclusive contract with your course provider.
Where and when are the Instructor Recertification Workshops held?
These workshops are attended by both new and veteran instructors and are held several times a year at various locations, but always in conjunction with NAR’s REALTORS® Conference & Expo and the Mid-year Legislative Meetings. Additional details and a current schedule can be viewed here.
What will I learn in the Instructor Recertification Workshop?
Everything you will need to share with students in the classroom will be reviewed in the Instructor Recertification workshop. We’ll also cover any changes in the ABR® Designation Course (this course is updated every two years), as well as teaching techniques for delivering this course. We will also spend half a day on instructor development, with different topics that will assist instructors with their teaching skills.
Is the Instructor Recertification Workshop required?
Yes, all instructors must attend once every two years. New instructors are strongly encouraged to attend as quickly as possible, since this will greatly enhance your success as a REBAC instructor.
If I would like to teach other REBAC courses, how do I get certified?
To teach another class, you must first attend it. All instructors are invited to attend, on a complimentary basis, any courses that REBAC hosts at various national events. Current offerings can be viewed here.
If these programs don’t fit your schedule, consult training4RE.com for a complete list of current course offerings. With limited exceptions, you’ll be able to audit any of these classes.
If you would like to audit one of these courses, submit the details of your request to Dawn Headtke, REBAC Business Development Manager. Dawn will then contact the licensed provider and instructor to get approval for the audit. We also ask that you attend a course with an instructor who has taught it at least twice before and has received excellent reviews. Courses that are audited in this manner are usually complimentary, but may require a minimal fee to cover materials.
How am I compensated for teaching REBAC courses?
REBAC is not involved in any compensation agreements (unless REBAC is offering the course). This is negotiated between you and the course provider. In establishing these agreements, we recommend that you also discuss compensation for hotel, travel, and food expenses, if appropriate, and document these terms in writing before you begin teaching.
- Among offerings from the REALTORS® Land Institute, only Land 101 may be taught by REBAC instructors;
- REBAC instructors can teach all classes offered through the Women’s Council of REALTORS® except Harnessing the Power of Skills-Based Performance Management.
